Recently set up with Kubuntu, following the suggested steps. Tried to install TF2 but noticed high disk usage—800MB consistently. This is on an older HDD that the system warns will fail soon. Switched to Windows installation on my SSD and attempted it. It capped at 650MB for write speed. The SSD has been running at medium load for about eight months. I’ve noticed some issues before, but now it seems okay. At least read speeds are much better. HDD was testing the game at around 300 Mbps, while the SSD handled it at 3-4Gbps—just a small difference.
Software versions may vary in size across different operating systems. If you're worried about differences between Linux and Windows, it's important to check the file sizes.
The Linux release might not be as compressed as the Windows version, which means your processor could handle it more efficiently and transfer data to the hard drive quicker overall. Often, the main reason for slow game downloads isn't just the internet speed or SSD write rate, but how fast the CPU decompresses the files.
