Hello everyone, your current setup includes a Ryzen 5 1600, stock cooler, and an Asus B350-F MOBO with 16 GB of RAM. The GPU is an MSI 1070ti Titanium at 8 GB. Your power supply is an EVGA 550W 80+ Gold. You're considering the Ryzen 5 5600X for $200. Your thoughts are: should you upgrade your CPU and MOBO now, or hold off and overclock the CPU while saving for a better GPU like a 2070 or 3070? Also, if you decide to upgrade your GPU later, do you think you'll need a more powerful PSU?

Does it meet your performance expectations? If yes, hold off until you truly require the upgrade. Otherwise, an i5-12400F with a B660 might offer comparable results to a 5600X. Also, do you know whether it’s the standard 1600 or the 1600AF model?

Generally it works, but I've noticed in many games on my new 1440p screen it's not running smoothly. Perhaps lowering the resolution would help. Or maybe updating the drivers with DDU and doing a fresh install could resolve the issue since I haven't done that in a while. It's still using the standard 1600 resolution.

A used Ryzen 7 3700X is currently around $170, which could extend your platform upgrade timeline by a couple of years. If you have the budget, the latest 12th-gen Intel setup works well. You probably won’t need a bigger PSU for the GPUs you’re using. I’m running a Seasonic Prime Ultra 550W Gold and tested the RTX 2070, 2070 Super, 3060 Ti, and 3070 FE without issues.

After reviewing this, I decided to go with an overclock and hold off until later. Initially, I thought about getting a cooler before the upgrade, but it seems Ryzens only really supports OC in specific cases. I suggest choosing a cooler that fits any future upgrades you might make. The Scythe Mugen 5 is a solid pick—it was suggested to me and I have no major concerns. Upgrading should be planned together with other changes. Most CPU improvements now mean more power usage and heat, so you’ll need better cooling and possibly a stronger PSU. Without a GPU upgrade, the CPU will struggle to keep up. A faster CPU can help with RAM speeds, though only slightly. You might opt for RAM above 3200MHz, but unless you’re willing to spend a lot and want maximum future potential, it’s not worth it. I chose a 5900X with an RTX3060ti because the price felt reasonable. Prices have dropped a lot—my RTX3060ti cost $850. Right now, 3080Ti models are available for $800–$1000. Depending on your budget, you could go with 5600X/5800X or 3070Ti/3080Ti. Just remember, you’ll need strong cooling, not just liquid. The best setup is a good case plus proper airflow, even with liquid. Also, keep in mind that top-tier cards like the 95W/105W processors produce more heat and need more power (at least 750W–850W). They also need better cases for effective cooling. Be mindful that newer graphics cards generate more heat and draw more power, so your CPU and GPU must work well together. Even with upcoming Ryzen and RTX4xxxx models, their release doesn’t always change prices much. If speed is your priority, you’ve probably outgrown the 1600 series—upgrade now. I’d recommend an ASUS TUF B550-PLUS or PRO (with a 3.2 header if needed) and a 5600X, 5700X, 5800X, or 5900X/5950X. A 3700X/3800X/3900X would be a big step up. But there’s a catch: saving money on the lower-end CPU might let you buy a better GPU, but the lower-end CPU could still slow it down.
