I recently discovered my old router is delivering only 20 Mbps after about five to seven years. After switching to Verizon FiOS, speeds should reach at least 54 Mbps. My current setup uses an ISP modem/router combo. My dad suggested checking forums for advice on router configurations—things like band selection (single, dual, triple) and overall range. For our home, a typical recommendation is around 20-30 Mbps per device, especially with multiple users. Our house is medium-sized with three floors, so coverage across all areas is important. We have four iPhones, three PCs, an Xbox One, and two cable boxes. We don’t have DSL but only COAX service. What should we look for in a new router?

I'd contact Verizon directly to request a new router. My ISP, Shaw, has already provided replacements about every couple of years. These devices don't last long enough for continuous use.

I had already attempted, but their explanation was based on the router being very outdated, having been retired for a while, which means it wouldn’t support new devices. Therefore, we need to purchase a fresh unit.

It felt similar to renting or buying outright. It was a rental, so they replaced it without charge. There was an issue with the Cisco router that kept restarting, which I reported to support. They told me it was unreliable and had a short life, so I upgraded to a better Hitron Gateway Modem at no cost.

I recall they simply handed it to us during the purchase of a cable box and Fios.

FIOS is Fiber, what you have is a moca router, not a modem. The ONT the router is connected to is your modem. I know of no company that makes moca routers in that config. You will need to purchase one from Verizon. OR see if Verizon will provision the Ethernet port on the ONT for internet use. The Moca router controls the TV boxes and stuff, so is kinda difficult to cut it out, unless your on internet only.
