I own a custom-built system and have relied on it for several months. Recently, whenever I unplugged it to install components or clean the space, I noticed a brief flash of light and an audible buzz that seemed like electrical activity. After plugging it back in, I followed these steps: 1. Power off the machine. 2. Toggle the PSU power switch. 3. Disconnect the power cable from the PSU. When I reactivated it, I simply reversed the process—inserted the cable into the PSU and flipped the switch. After pressing the button, the RGB indicators on the board and CPU fan briefly lit up before fading. No fans responded; only the RGB lights stayed on. Eventually, I removed the motherboard from the case and shorted the power switch pins. The computer started up, but it wouldn’t boot to my SSD drive. In the BIOS, all connected drives appeared under I/O, yet I couldn’t access them. The data on my SSD remained intact, so I backed it up and reinstalled Windows. My current challenges are: 1. The system won’t power on through the case’s power button after being placed back inside. 2. I’m wary of the PSU since the issue began, though I have protection in place and can request a replacement. I’m unsure how to test it beyond shorting the fourth and fifth pins—this worked, causing the fan to move and then stop, thanks to the PSU’s zero-spin feature. Could the power button cable be damaged if the PSU was malfunctioning? Also, the case has protection (the glass), so I’m not certain it would break first. It seems the SSD still held its OS, though it wasn’t recognized as a bootable drive. It appears to function normally now. When the motherboard was out, I observed RGB lights on its back and noticed they also flashed when the PSU was powered on—possibly the same flash I saw inside. The board’s RGB cycles through one color, sometimes white, but it can vary. This might be what I saw via the I/O ports. No signs of burns were present, though I’d appreciate any specific areas to inspect closely. Regarding testing the PSU, I don’t have any tools or another motherboard to swap. I’m open to affordable options and am hoping you can suggest a safe way to verify its condition without risking further damage. I’m particularly concerned about the case’s protection; if it fails, what would be the next steps?
I looked into all my connections and noticed I swapped the power lead and switch positions. That must be why it didn’t restart once I unplugged everything and booted it fresh. Before touching anything, the switch wires might have shifted during the installation of the 1tb HHD. The graphics card probably came out of place when I installed it. It seems simple to disconnect or loosen them. Still, I’m unsure why my M.2 SSD wasn’t listed as a bootable drive in the boot manager despite having space and data intact, but after properly setting the switch, the system powers on normally and no other problems are appearing.
