Hi there, I'm looking to upgrade my setup with an M.2 slot and want to check if my current X99A Gaming Pro Carbon is compatible. It lists support for M.2 3gen, but I'm curious about using a 4gen PCIe M.2 in a 3gen motherboard—could that slow things down? Also, I'm planning to buy the Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe 4.0 Gen4 SSD.
It functions, but purchasing a Gen4 NVMe isn't worthwhile since it won't offer any significant improvement. The best choice with the rocket would be if you intend to upgrade and repurpose components later, though even then support for PCIe Gen 4/5 from Intel will likely end around 2021–2022. It's unlikely Intel will ever provide Gen4 support again.
