Hi there everyone, so I have a Frankenstein thing of a computer and am thinking of getting the 3080, as the deal is just insane and I finally can afford such a highend card! My build: CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 (Non X) MoBo: X370 (ROG CROSSHAIR VI HERO (WI-FI AC)) RAM: 32GB DDR4 3000Mhz Cl15 (Vengeance LPX) (I do virtualization in a lab environment a lot ) Cooler (Air): Scythe Mugen 5 (PCG-Edition) GPU GTX 1060 6GB (EVGA Superclocked) PSU: 850W SSR-850FX (Seasonic Focus Gold PLUS) Fully Modular I know the parts are kind of weird, but I got them over the course of roughly 2 years and got great deals for everything. Question 1: How much of a performance hit do I have to expect? Right now I'm only playing on 1920x1200 60Hz (Lenovo Thinkvision L220x. It's colors are amazing!) As far as I know, the performance hit becomes less and less serious the higher the resolution gets? Question 2: Is the course of action down below reasonable? So I'm thinking: 1. Upgrade to RTX 3080 (September) 2. Upgrade Monitor to 1440p 144hz with G-Sync (Christmas?) 3. Upgrade CPU to R7 3700X, if needed. You're at a high resolution, so even a mid-range GPU won't matter much. You can push everything to its limit and still maintain 60.
1. When the 3000 series drops for a week or so, grab a used card—probably they'll have 2070s available for less than 300.
2. A better monitor first makes more sense.
3. If you decide to upgrade, sell the board and invest in a Ryzen 4000 with a B550.
I'm planning to upgrade my monitor to a 1440p 144hz G-Sync screen before Christmas. I also aim to run all the latest games at full 1440p resolution with RTX On for at least four years. It doesn't have to be 144hz in single-player titles, mainly focusing on multiplayer games like Rocket League, R6S, and CoD. Any ideas?
For the latest card, choose the 3080 just like @jaslion suggested. Don't mix a Ferrari engine with an Acura body. Improve your monitor and motherboard/CPU first, perhaps add RAM if you wish—otherwise you'll end up with a powerful PC ready for high resolution and FPS, but you'll have to wait until Christmas! haha that's just me. We're discussing a future in 2070 where Ultra isn't necessary. Usually it's just minor details like 8x AA or over-sampling that don't really matter beyond having extra performance.
