Check if your processor is malfunctioning.
Hello, I recently bought an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 to use in a computer I was building for guests at my home. However upon looking at the IHS I found two small chips of metal on the top which keeps the CPU Cooler from sitting flat on the CPU which creates a large gap of air. I just bought it from Amazon and there only help is for me to send it out and then they'll send the replacement out which would mean another 1-2 weeks until I h could get the computer running. I am looking to see if anyone has dealt with this type of manufacturing defect and how they fixed it? I'll attach the photos I was able to take... Please be kind I'm not a photographer! The two red circles are the two defects in the IHS, the top one is much larger than the bottom one. Thanks for your help, -Rocky
Consider reaching out to the store where you purchased it. If they confirm it's fine and it turns out faulty, you can reference their statement that it should function and request a replacement. If they claim it's defective, meaning the chip isn't reliable for your system, they should offer a replacement. Otherwise, they're likely selling faulty products that won't work as intended.
Begin the AIDA stress test from the provided link. While it runs, launch Prime 95 as suggested; your computer may become somewhat unresponsive, which is normal. Keep it running for as long as possible or at least a couple of hours. Check the Task Manager to confirm all cores are active near 100%. If everything looks normal and no issues arise (like a blue screen or abrupt restart), you can proceed. The results show no actual damage, just possible CPU stress that might have caused a crack or minor defect. If everything checks out, you can use it without replacing the CPU. Just be careful not to scratch or damage the cooler with metal pieces, using only your finger if needed.
The pins appear acceptable, though there is some damage or defect present. I wouldn't be very confident about it.
Regarding the concerns about damages or CPU pins, there was no damage at all—it was a brand new package in a sealed box. I also need to mention there are two small metal pieces attached to the top of the CPU's IHS. I reached out to Amazon, the seller, and they offered a return or exchange, though it would take 1-2 weeks for the replacement. The main issue is the time delay before I could receive it. If they still had it in stock when I filed a claim, that would help. My biggest worry is the downtime during the return and replacement process. I was wondering if anyone has any advice on whether I should bring a file or tool to carefully remove those small parts without harming the pins. Thanks for all your responses! Happy Valentine's Day, Loves, ~Rocky
It seemed exactly as expected to me, though I’m unsure if that affects the idea of "just filing it down." Personally, I wouldn’t go that route since it probably cancels your warranty. Even if it doesn’t (unlikely), this seems like an unusual defect to keep. It’s frustrating not having a replacement for about two weeks, but in the long run, a new one would be better. Of course, you could also try using it as-is—if it functions, it might be worth holding on to. Otherwise, return or exchange would be the best option.
Submitting those two stamps would completely cancel your warranty, just like Lapping does. Wait a bit and handle the return or replacement through Amazon.
