I'm preparing a gaming PC build for the first time and was considering a B450 motherboard with an AMD RYZEN 5 3600 CPU. Many recommendations suggest using a B450 with a 3600 CPU, but PCPartPicker keeps stating the RYZEN 5 3600 isn't compatible. Could PCPartPicker be wrong? Any alternative motherboard ideas would be helpful.

Certain models aren't fully compatible with Ryzen 3xxx units right away because they're not the latest. They need a BIOS upgrade. But many new boards come pre-installed with the correct BIOS. The packaging usually has a label indicating this.

It’s somewhat accurate but not fully correct. A few B450 models come with Ryzen 2 built-in. The MAX versions generally require it. All others should work, though a BIOS update is necessary. This task can be straightforward or very complex based on the system’s specifics.
