Currently, only 8GB leaves little room for smooth gameplay because Windows consumes more memory. I’d say 16GB is the sweet spot for modern gaming, unless you’re playing very simple titles—then doubling to 16GB would help.

You can definitely run with 8+4GB if you're on a tight budget—it's still better than 8GB, though it's not ideal. It's only a slight improvement if you really need more space.
