Consider upgrading to the Core 2 Duo E4600 and fitting it into an ASUS IPILP-LC case. Your existing Pentium Dual Core E2140 at 1.6GHz should work fine in that setup.

This appears to be a situation where official support isn't confirmed, but based on the referenced page, the best option seems to be E4400. The E4600 might function as an OEM variant with a slightly higher clock speed.

I was just checking to confirm since I'm upgrading an old machine and planning to turn it into a gaming PC.

From a hardware standpoint, it seems feasible because both the motherboard and CPU use the LGA775 socket. It would be wise to verify the BIOS settings on the motherboard to confirm compatibility with the CPU.

This guidance isn't reliable. Not every CPU and motherboard pair works together.

Sorry for the many questions, but it seems the Xeon E3110 isn't compatible with that motherboard. Apologies for the confusion!

This guide covers the situation with a prebuilt motherboard and an outdated chipset that can't handle speeds beyond 800MHz FSB. The recommendations provided should be near their best possible outcome.

on second look, unfortunately this is a HP motherboard, not a normal Asus off the shelf board like I assumed. You will have to go with HP official specs. I have found them here https://support.hp.com/cn-zh/document/c01299848 though in my oppinion, you should still be able to use the other cpu, but there is a chance it could not work, so unless you already have it or can get it for free you may want to go with the e4400.
