He recently upgraded to a full PC for his birthday and wants to play modded Minecraft with you. You have a strong gaming machine (Ryzen 5 7600, 4070) and some knowledge of processors, but his system uses an i5 13420H which I’m not very familiar with in games. I understand that the GPU is relatively weak and he has 8GB RAM. I’m curious about the best mod packs for his setup and whether overclocking the GPU or CPU would help. He also plans to add Sodium and OptiFine to his mods. Thanks a lot for your help—feel free to ask any questions!
Is the laptop missing a separate graphics card? Plus, you can't boost the H-series processor beyond its default settings.
There's probably not much you can do about the graphics (unless it's a mobile chip in a desktop for some reason), but more RAM never hurts. (If he has two sticks of memory, that would help the iGPU a little as well.) I'd get that PC up to at least 16 gigs across two sticks. If these mods don't cost anything, you might as well just try them and see how it goes. They won't run as well as on your desktop PC, but they should be playable at the very least.
