I constructed a new gaming or coding PC for myself recently and during stress tests I noticed the CPU reaching 98°C instantly. Despite this, clock speeds remain steady between 5 and 5.1 GHz, and usage stays at 100%. This is puzzling because AMD CPUs usually overheat around 95°C. After updating BIOS, drivers, and cooling components, the temperature now tops 93-94°C while maintaining the same speeds and full load. Should I consider upgrading my cooler? I’m using a Cooler Master Hyper H412R in a Corsair 4000D case with just one intake and one exhaust fan. I’ve ordered additional fans for the case, but it’s still tricky to switch cables between Windows and Ubuntu. The WSL2 doesn’t recognize the GPU, leaving me stuck with dual booting. Which Linux distribution would be reliable for NVIDIA graphics?

If it reached 98°C immediately, the cooler wasn’t installed properly. The CPU isn’t fully seated against thermal mass, causing a sudden temperature rise since there’s only a thermal paste connection between the CPU and cooler. Take apart the system and try again. Also, running AIDA64 without a correctly mounted cooler could be risky.

It’s a solid cooler compared to the AMD stock model, ranking around tier 9 out of 10. The peerless assassin sits at tier 4, while Noctua D15 is tier 3. For better performance, water cooling would be ideal. Still, it should handle a 7600 with only about 100w draw. @emosun you’re right about the mounting problem.
