Hey there, I recently got a 10th generation system pre-assembled with 16GB of DDR4 RAM and an i7-10700 processor. For fellow users with similar chips, what’s the best RAM speed you should use to avoid problems? I understand it does matter a bit between CPU models, and while the 10th generation is only a couple of years old, I’m still checking compatibility. Right now I’m running three Chrome tabs and background music, using about half my RAM. When I switch to newer games, usage jumps to 75-90%. I want to play God of War at full settings while keeping at least 10GB free so I can keep my other apps running. I’m considering DDR4 modules that support 3200MHz or higher, with a minimum of 32GB. It’s surprising how much RAM capacity is now being limited—remember when 2GB felt huge?

Running typical speeds should work fine. Intel and AMD are different, and memory issues are uncommon. Your problem might be elsewhere.

I don't see where else the issue would be coming from. No weirdly high CPU usage, network activity, GPU load, SSD activity, etc. Generally I have quite a few tasks running at any given time. For example, I have OpenShell and RetroBar open at all times. I refuse to use the hilariously terrible taskbar and start screen that comes with Win11. Also, my keyboard software, Radeon software, browser tabs (3-10 open at a time) music playing, and a game open all at the same time. All of this is absolutely necessary for me and instead of getting rid of tasks like RetroBar, I'll just upgrade my RAM because keeping the classic Start menu and taskbar is extremely important to me. I have a decently fast CPU so I never notice those things choking down my CPU, just my 16GB of RAM fills up pretty quick.

It varies by motherboard model. For devices other than Z490, Z590, B560 or H570, memory overclocking isn't supported and performance caps at 2933 MHz.

I'm really struggling to get my G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3600 working smoothly with an i5-12400F and B660 board. I'm trying to run DDR4 3200 speeds while encoding a 4GB PS2 ISO with 7zip, but the PC keeps crashing at 2133 MHz. This seems to happen with Intel too.

It really depends on the game you're playing. Many titles I enjoy would quickly consume all the RAM available when I had 16GB. Now that I have 32GB, it still feels like a solid upgrade. It's surprisingly affordable, especially if you buy a kit on eBay. While there are exceptions to every rule, AMD's memory compatibility is significantly better than Intel's. In fact, you wouldn't need to pair RAM with CPU or motherboard kits—just buy what you need. Intel has consistently performed well, no matter what I added. For example, with a first-gen Ryzen, two different CPUs, two motherboards, and three RAM sets, the system still functions fine. I know it's improved since then, but performance remains disappointing.
