The debate around Windows 10 free upgrade licensing transfer is widespread online. Microsoft hasn't commented much on the matter. If you own a retail version of Windows, will the free upgrade apply to it? Could you install it on a different computer or device?

It appears you're receiving an update notice. Your code should function with the upcoming ISO release scheduled for the 29th. You can input the retail code on the new Windows 10 ISO to ensure compatibility, as confirmed by a colleague working at Microsoft.

Upgrading to Windows 10 is no longer available. Would you like to move the upgrade to a different device if you still have Windows 8.1 or 7?

You can apply your 7/8.1 key to the Windows 10 ISO and it should work. The instructions don't mention needing an upgrade first.

Upgrade activation depends on the hardware IDs of the motherboard and CPU. It won't function. Tested it on both real devices and virtual machines. Possible solutions exist, but they fall into a gray zone.
