Hey there! Just a quick note—I’m using Windows 10 Tech Preview and saw a notification on my Windows 7 laptop saying Windows 10 will launch on July 29th. I’m curious: if I have Windows 10 installed on my own desktop, can existing Tech Preview users still get the free year of Windows 10? Or would they need to switch back to an older OS like Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 to access it?

Only those with genuine Windows 7 or 8 keys should consider this. I purchased a Windows 8 Pro key today on Reddit (M$SoftwareSwap) for $20, and it will definitely save me money since I can upgrade to Windows 10 for free from that source.

Technical preview versions will transition to the final Windows 10 release, though this updated copy won't be labeled as authentic Windows. Genuine users must input a code from 7 or 8 to verify authenticity.

Genuine users enjoy stable performance and full feature support. Rolling back isn’t recommended unless you need a specific fix. The technical preview does offer a rollback option, so it’s worth checking before purchasing.

Heyyo, For the OP's question? People like us running the Windows 10 Insider Preview will be offered the chance to upgrade from the preview to the release version... but it'll be full price. If you want to get the free upgrade? You will need to install windows 7 or 8/8.1 and upgrade from that. An upgrade product key is different from a full product key. Genuine = non-pirated. If your copy is pirated? It'll let you upgrade to Windows 10 maybe... but then when Genuine Validation randomly kicks in? it'll say your product key has been flagged for piracy and you'll lose your desktop background and it'll tell you your windows is not genuine and potentially after 30 days it could potentially prevent you from using Windows at all... That? Or Windows will activate a genuine validation check on your current key and setup (maybe for those who use that bios image genuine validation hack meant for OEMs and such) and could potentially cause a pirated version of Windows 7 or 8 to do the whole "you may be a victim of counterfeit"

My Windows 8 was original, and version 10 came from Microsoft... Dietrichw mentioned we might be able to upgrade, but it won’t be labeled as "genuine," so I’ll need to purchase a new operating system again...I still possess the Windows 8 disk, but the key has already been activated...It really frustrates the testers.

Hey there, the insider preview is simply a sneak peek, a beta test. The version for insiders will end after Windows 10 is released. What sets this apart from older versions like Windows 7 is that you can purchase a full product key and upgrade the insider preview to Windows 10. To get the free upgrade from Windows 7/8 to Windows 10, you need it installed, running, and the popup in your system tray—probably requiring some genuine validation first. After that, it should send you a product key to your email.

Alright, thanks...it seems I'll have to pay once more.
