Hi guys, short question:
My XPS15 9550 stopped yesterday. If I bought a used one with the same specs (CPU, GPU etc.) and swapped its main SSD for the broken laptop's SSD, would I still be able to work normally in my usual setup (same OS, software) without issues? Or would Windows 10 (OEM, likely Win10 Home*) treat it as a different machine and block operations?
* Probably Win10 Home (other actions might differ if it should be Win 10 Professional?)
I need to replace the broken computer quickly. Thanks in advance for your advice!
P.S. Please don’t suggest buying a new laptop right now – I know that’s outdated. But I really need to access my specialized software and data urgently. Choosing a new model will take time I don’t have, plus it would mean reinstalling many apps. Appreciate your understanding.
If it is OEM, then no. OEM versions are limited to single systems and merely swap the motherboard, often disabling the Windows installation. Even if you replace the main board, the different motherboard ID remains, keeping the system unchanged. Another problem arises during OS transfer—programs may fail to run or not boot at all. Therefore, a clean Windows install plus a valid activation key is essential. You might be able to extract data from the old drive by connecting it as a data source for a fresh installation, but applications from the previous OS usually won't function properly due to outdated identifiers.

I’m wondering if Windows would at least begin functioning within a week, requiring the input of a license key during that period (so I could perform some urgent, final analyses with the installed software)? Or is it more likely that the system would not start at all?
Off topic – just in case someone with expertise on a DELL XPS 15 reads this:
Pressing the power button briefly activates the fan and the power LED built into the button (lasting 2-3 seconds), after which the laptop powers off.
Changing the battery or swapping out the DC jack didn’t resolve the issue.
I also tried using a fresh, original DELL charger; it didn’t help.
I attempted the DELL power bank (fully charged) that came with the laptop instead of or alongside any charger.
Pressing the power button for over 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery also failed.
Removing RAM caused the front LEDs to flash amber and white, but the system still wouldn’t start, even after reinserting the modules.
Taking out the CMOS/BIOS battery for five minutes didn’t help either.
I also inspected both the DC jack and the battery cable plug pins; they appear correctly positioned and straight.
How did these issues begin?
The battery’s charge level dropped to 5% even though the laptop was connected. It then automatically hibernated. When I turned it back on, it gradually fell to 0%. Although I could still use the laptop for several hours with the charger connected, I ended the session by putting it in hibernation mode. The next morning, the laptop wouldn’t start at all, regardless of which charger was used (both original DELL chargers, identical to the one sold with the device).
Interesting note:
Using the battery from when the problems started but previously at 0% capacity (a third-party vendor; it worked fine for the past couple of months and had enough capacity for 2-3 hours), the power LED and fan briefly lit up after pressing the power button (only if the laptop was plugged in). However, with a new replacement battery (possibly partially charged) or an old one (third-party, likely dead), nothing happened.

The main issue when transferring an SSD between machines revolves around the drivers, particularly the ones for the motherboard.
It's difficult to predict exactly what will occur. If the systems are nearly identical, it should boot up and the most you encounter is possibly the window licensee. However, Windows usually manages well and will often boot partially even with significant differences in hardware. You can then try installing various drivers to restore full functionality. This process, though, isn't straightforward. Often, you need to search through different settings to find and fix faulty drivers, and not all of them may be visible at once.
It either starts or fails completely. When it does start, you might encounter a BSoD at some point. I can't predict the exact outcome—some will boot and function normally; others may get a BSoD; some won't boot at all—but these are the possible scenarios. Even when Windows shuts down, you can still use it without issues. Win10 is more forgiving in this regard, as is Win7. Older systems, like WinXP, were even less reliable (for example, WinXP didn't work without activation).
Not particularly knowledgeable about laptops, especially Dell, but from a hardware standpoint, it could be a dead motherboard (MoBo VRMs) or another internal problem affecting the battery. Dell is known for creating various proprietary components, and I've seen Dell PCs that only work with genuine parts, not aftermarket RAM.

USAFRet: Good point. I should probably buy an external adapter and first try to rescue the data from the SSD. You are concerned that the process of moving the SSD from the old laptop to the new one could damage the SSD physically (i.e. by touching vulnerable structures; the SSD does not have any cover) or that the data structure on the SSD may be damaged if Windows does not boot properly in the new laptop?
There are various possibilities.
And...
If your actual files are stored elsewhere, you don't have to transfer the old drive and OS to a new system.
Simply install the applications you need on the new system, and your files will be ready.
Done. No issues left.
