Hey there! I'm just starting out with PCs and haven't really touched a computer before. I've been playing games on consoles all my life and never used a PC much. I'm planning to take apart an old laptop from about nine years ago, maybe swap the CPU and add more RAM so my mom can use it for simple browsing. I thought it would be a good chance to learn how processors work and clean them properly. Right now it has a Core i5-2430M chip, but I'm not sure what other models fit this laptop. Any advice would mean a lot to me! Also, the model looks like a VPCEH21N1E from Sony Vaio. Thanks in advance!
Unless it's an extremely old laptop, laptop processors are typically soldered onto the motherboard and cannot be swapped out. It's best to open the case first and confirm whether your processor fits the socket. Remember, even if it does, the BIOS might not accept a different chip than the one currently installed.
You need exceptional skill and costly equipment to take out the soldered CPU and rework it onto another chip. In most cases, memory upgrades are limited to DDR3 SO-DIMM depending on the board and available space. Note: read Intel's ARK more thoroughly—it describes a BGA package on an LGA substrate. *facepalm*
The most significant enhancement would be swapping the hard drive for an SSD. It offers much quicker performance and enhances the overall experience. Possibly adding more RAM could help if more than 4GB is required, but the SSD upgrade has the biggest impact first. A CPU upgrade would only provide a small boost for web browsing and might shorten battery life.
I unscrewed it to wipe the fan and heatsink earlier, thinking the CPU could be removed then. I didn’t handle it carefully since I didn’t want to damage anything. I’ll check again later, thanks everyone!
