raid is built to avoid downtime on big servers by replacing individual drives one at a time when a failure occurs, not by cloning devices in real time. Running two devices as clones isn’t the standard approach for data preservation. Even with raid enabled, additional backups are still recommended for extra protection. I had my understanding completely off.

Raid isn't just a backup solution. Imagine losing a file, encountering malware, or facing a Windows update failure—having a full reinstall becomes necessary. A backup from the previous day remains intact and can be restored. RAID still retains any deletions, viruses, or corrupted installations. Even more critical issues, such as hardware failures or data loss, can occur despite RAID protection (like leaks in cooling systems). Nevertheless, numerous backups can be stored on separate power lines (with surge protection) or only activated during the backup process (some even stay online 24/7 via network connections).

This makes sense when you consider the setup. With no physical issues like leaks or lightning, and software functioning normally, a RAID configuration would be beneficial. Even with just two drives, you can replace the failed one and let it recover while the other remains stable. This maintains data integrity and ensures continuous operation.

I follow the same method. I rely on NovaBackup’s system image tool, which updates efficiently. You can set it to reimage weekly so any new software or updates are always present. All information resides on a dedicated drive, backed up daily to a second drive and stored in AWS.

It seems unclear if it's free or secure. Could you clarify your concerns?

NovaBackup offers paid features but some alternatives are available at no cost. WD hard drives previously had Acronis versions you could download, though I’m unsure if that’s still true. Macrium’s basic version is free. I chose NovaBackup because we have three computers needing backups and there was a discount, but most services now use yearly subscriptions.
