Hello everyone, I'm working on upgrading my Linux development PC from an i7-4770K with an Asus Z87-A board to an i7-13700K on an Asus Prime Z790-A WiFi motherboard. On the motherboard's support page, they mention updating the UEFI using a specific ME. Since there have been many changes since 2014, I'm curious: what is the Intel Management Engine (ME)? Why is it necessary? I checked Wikipedia and it looks like ME sits above the UEFI and assists the operating system, though I don’t fully understand its role. Should I update the ME before or after the UEFI update? The ME Update Tool on that Asus site is a Windows executable—how do I run it in Linux? Thanks ahead of time!

It varies by update. However, you'll notice the latest BIOS version includes ME firmware within the update. It modifies the CPU microcode to ensure the most recent security patches. Also remember to turn off the Asus Armory crate (which automatically installs Windows drivers) in the BIOS settings.

This update includes ME 16.1.25.1917. It refers to the specific revision, not a separate BIOS/UEFI installation. If it's just microcode changes, you'll simply upgrade the UEFI/BIOS to the newest release, and the ME will be applied automatically.
