Z490 is compatible only with 10th and 11th generation devices. It does not support 9th generation models.

You're curious about moving up from a 9900K, but the Z490 chipset is limited to CPUs from the 10th and 11th generation. The 8th and 9th generation Intel chips only fit in 300 series boards.

The 9900K remains a solid chip and should still function well for several more years. I upgraded to a 12600K simply because I chose to, not out of necessity.
