These are entirely distinct experiences. My experience is limited to Rome 2, which was decent but falls short of titles like Shogun 2 or Medieval Total War.
Lords of the Fallen was a crappy Souls-like, if you want a game like that go buy Dark Souls 2. Rome 2 is ok. Any TW fan is going to tell you it's awful, me included, but if you're not a TW fan, no reason not to get it if you like the time period (and RTW is more than a decade old now, and mod support has dried up over the past few years). It's fine without addons, CA were real dicks this time about holding factions back for DLC, which means you won't even get to play Sparta/Thracians/Nomads/etc, which sucks, and Rome (the faction) is probably the most boring implementation of the SPQR that I could possibly imagine. Aka, if you're going to play it, play it for the rather excellent way they've recreated the Barbarian and Hellenistic styles of warfare. But...if you're not attached to Rome, buy Shogun 2 instead, a far superior game with more focus. Loading times are crap tho
Rome 2 has been my experience since Rome 1, but compared to other titles like Napoleon and Empire, it falls short. Removing all unit and faction packs makes the game feel less engaging. The main draw comes from modding—additions such as Dei, Roma Invicta, and a Game of Thrones update add depth and extend playtime significantly. If you're not fond of Rome, consider Medieval 2 or Shogun 2 as alternatives!
Yahtzee's outrageous rants only emphasize that Lords of the Fallen is an excellent game. His video critiques are meant for fun, not serious analysis. He’ll share anything to sound exciting, not because it’s accurate.
