I've found the cheapest X3D part available so far—a 6-core 7600X3D clocking around 4.1/4.7Ghz. It's not as quick as I hoped, and you still face the price and performance trade-offs of an AM5 setup. The AM4 5700X3D is noticeably slower. In my opinion, most people end up paying more for newer models while older ones struggle with speed.
You're referring to what speed means in practice. Just focusing on clock speed doesn't tell the whole story—IPC matters too. No one really uses Bulldozer chips anymore. I'll also politely challenge some of your earlier thoughts. A 5600G might be slightly faster, but most applications won't benefit much from a 0.2ghz boost compared to a larger cache. Unless you need the extra GPU power!
I mean it's moving too slowly in any measurable way to keep up with FS. The 5700X3D barely hits 4.1GHz. It's nowhere near a Bulldozer at that speed, nor a Pentium at 4.1GHz. This isn't about comparing old performance figures from thirty years ago—it's not the point unless you're claiming my 5600's IPC is drastically different. I got the 5600G because the X wasn't available then, and having an iGPU helps with troubleshooting or streaming. Even without changing BIOS settings, it's already running over 4.2GHz. Right now, I'm looking for another balanced chip for the next FS build. That's all.
Intel's reduced core count part performs worse when overclocked. Most people don't buy i3s or i5 for single-core overclocking contests (you won't see those in the charts). A few years ago, some sold pre-verified OC Intel CPUs with charts showing i9 surpassing i7 and i5. If you don't require extra cores, just turn them off.
On a x3D chip the performance gain more than compensates for the slower clock speed in gaming, particularly in flight/racing simulations. You’ll notice below that the 7800X3D outperforms or matches the 13900K, even running about 1GHz slower (without crashing). Anyway, your budget doesn’t fit any top-end CPU. i9 and i7 are priced similarly to x3D chips, starting around $400, and Intel consumes significantly more power. Good boards are usually between $150 and $250, while DDR5 is cheaper for AM5 since you don’t need speeds above 6000CL30 (and x3D chips have less RAM bandwidth dependence). Moreover, AM5 will still work with at least one or two new generations, whereas Intel 1700 is outdated and 1851 is nearing end of life. So it’s at least a $650 investment.
Yeah I'm beginning to see it now unfortunately. The last time I went this in-depth researching hardware was upgrading the FS rig from 3770K to 7700K, the latter actually still running 24/7 in a media server to this day albeit now underclocked and on air. Disabling cores def works but you're essentially still paying for the Presidential Suite and sleeping on the floor and I'm just not prepared to spend that much for a seldom-used 1080p machine. If we were to rethink this a little, instead of the absolute fastest chip available for FS core count notwithstanding, in your various opinions what would be the best sensible "high-ish clockspeed" CPU for $200-$300? My 5600G was about US$140 so there's still some room for improvement.
Old board and RAM setup versus new board and RAM really comes down to the specific configuration you chose. Intel isn't the most affordable option when you opt for a brand-new chip, but using 13th and 14th generation parts carries some risk to the processor's longevity.
