Hi, I see you're experiencing internet speed drops after refreshing your modem. It sounds like the problem might be with your ISP or possibly a faulty device. You're currently using a NETGEAR CM400 modem and an AC1750 router. The speed you're getting is around 100 Mbps initially but drops to about 5 Mbps after a while. You're considering upgrading to a CM500 or CM600, and you've checked the Ethernet cables. Let me know if you'd like advice on troubleshooting further or deciding on a replacement.
The ISP will verify the connection direction to confirm it originates from them, ensuring successful reach to your modem before identifying any problems. If you're referring to a direct connection, clarify whether it's a router or a modem. You shouldn't connect your computer directly to the modem; instead, link it to the router. The modem will function but exposes your computer to risks since it lacks safeguards—it acts as a direct link, making your device the primary security point. Ensure all devices connect to the router, not the modem. If the issue persists in another location with the same equipment, it may indicate a hardware fault. Upgrading to a newer modem is advisable, especially if it's outdated. Remember, when a new modem arrives, the ISP may require changing its MAC address from the old device. Once equipped with new gear, contact the ISP to update their records accordingly.
For testing, linking your computer directly to the modem via Ethernet is acceptable. It’s best to ensure your system has active anti-malware or virus protection before connecting, even during testing.
They didn't deliver a modem; you received it yourself. Ask them to provide one again.
Yes, briefly—perhaps a few minutes—but the OP might have misrepresented it. It seems they were trying to convey something else, possibly confusing the details.
The router's make and model are shown above, and it's about two months old. The connection setup is this: Wall → coax cable → modem → ethernet → router → ethernet → PC. The same problem happens when I do this: Wall → coax cable → modem → ethernet → PC (I just found a security concern with this).
Thanks for the heads up regarding connecting my PC to the modem (you learn something new every day). My current plan is to purchase a new modem and trial run it. If the problem persists, I might return the modem. I figured as much regarding the MAC address and the ISP. I will give them a call when I try it out.
We currently possess our modem. I might buy a replacement to determine if it fixes the problem.
They don’t offer modems from them, I wouldn’t consider buying one.
