Character gender choice in gaming
Character gender choice in gaming
These summaries reflect how individuals feel about choices. It’s unclear if people tend to favor a specific gender, especially when certain roles are predetermined. In some scenarios, options should be removed to avoid bias. I’d prefer more detailed categories like LGBT, but the list would become extensive. I’m not conducting formal research, so I must acknowledge these constraints.
I tend to act more boldly when playing with characters of the opposite gender. To achieve victory, I usually need to adopt the same gender as my real-life self. Most games don’t offer this flexibility. Hitman (male), Assassin's Creed (depends on story), Ghost Recon Wildlands (male), Grand Theft Auto (male), Sniper Elite (male), Final Fantasy 15 (male), Portal (female), Tomb Raider (female). Those that allow character gender selection are very limited.
Usually male characters are used because developers often skip creating separate animations or models for women without clipping issues. This results in similar movement patterns. The only exceptions are Saints Row 3/4 and Mass Effect 1, which made changes in later updates. For most games I play, it doesn’t feel right since female characters would struggle in real-life situations. Unless the game is sci-fi with power armor, I’m fine with a female lead, though I worry they might come across as too hard to handle. Regarding LGBT topics, have a great day!
You can enjoy the cute anime girl game. If not, just start again.
I often pick to act as a woman just to switch things up, because most games let you only play as a guy.
I had to leave out certain titles from the discussion because they didn’t fit well with my preferences. Considering this, some genres seem more challenging than others. My biggest time drain is FFXIV, so MMOs are an option for you. I remember GTAV let you design a character, though I couldn’t find anything appealing. Pokémon Go? The young son (<10) of a relative was puzzled by my female avatar. Sadly, I rarely play games with cute anime girls. I enjoy Touhou fanart but don’t like the game itself. Perhaps expanding my interests would help. When characters are set, does that change your game choices? For instance, FFXV feels like the end for me in offline main series. I bought it but didn’t play it. I didn’t connect with the bromance (or Cindy), and the combat didn’t impress. I watched gameplay on YouTube and liked the story, but it didn’t motivate me to try it. On the other hand, I’m interested in Blue Reflection but will wait for a sale. I also wonder about starting in Atelier, since there are options without strong preferences.
