I recently bought a HP Pavillion Gaming PC equipped with an Intel i5-9400 (2.9GHz), 8GB DDR4 RAM, and a GeForce 1660Ti. I was curious about upgrading the RAM to 16GB. I checked Task Manager and noticed my current setup: half the slots are used, DIMM type, and it runs at 2666Mhz. While playing games, the RAM usage reaches 85-95%. I read online discussions and some users mentioned potential long-term memory problems or even boot issues. My main worry is whether this upgrade would be beneficial or risky. The motherboard appears to be an 843B.
Alright, thanks guys. Im just concerned, because this is my first gaming PC I had that runs games I want over 60FPS , without bad graphics. I've built one before, but that doesn't run as well as my new one. Also, one more question - since there are only 2 slots for the RAM, it doesn't have to have the same manufacturer, right? Only the same speed/frequency? I apologize in advance if my questions are dumb, I don't have significant knowledge about this stuff.. It would really assist a lot, and I find it strange that OEMs don't offer anything with a single-channel memory. It's not too severe considering it's from Intel, but still.
You'd like to use DIMMs from the same maker, ensuring they share the same speed and clock settings. Simply remove the DIMM and search online for its model number. If the frequency and timing align, you're set—manufacturer choice isn't essential.
