I recently assembled a gaming PC around late 2020 and am thinking about updating its BIOS now that I have some free time before starting school. My current setup includes a Ryzen 5 3600XT, an ASUS ROG B550-F, G.Skill Trident Z Neo at 3600MHz, an AMD RX5700 XT, a 32GB RAM module, and a suitable PSU. I’m wondering if upgrading the BIOS would be worthwhile for me. I’m also exploring whether to upgrade to a higher-end CPU, as I’m unsure how long AM4 chips will last and my motherboard should handle even the best models. You're checking whether the motherboard BIOS can already accommodate the CPU you're considering... if not, you should update the BIOS before purchasing and installing it. Unless your motherboard allows BIOS flashing without a CPU or RAM installed. Of course, you can always update the BIOS at any time... but since you've been using it for a while now, I assumed you were content with the current setup. I tend to update the BIOS whenever a new version is released, and over the past five years I haven't faced much trouble with that process, often not needing to adjust settings again. However, in the past there have been issues such as the new BIOS resetting the settings and requiring you to retrace what was previously configured.
