I’m trying to switch my IP address using the command prompt, but it’s showing errors because the Ethernet connections are disconnected. I have one Ethernet cable connected to my PC and another to my TV. The issue seems to be with the media being disconnected on both cables.

You're considering switching your ISP IP because you suspect a breach or want better privacy. A VPN such as Windscribe free 10GB/month or PIA VPN can help secure your connection.

Your public IP address is provided by your internet service provider. Your private IP is managed by your router. To modify your private IP, access the settings on your router's web page.

The IP address is managed by the gateway, not the client. Any changes you make via the command line won’t alter your IP. The only practical way to force an IP shift on a dynamic account is to disconnect your modem for at least 24 hours and hope it happens. You can contact them to request a reset, but YMWV.

This doesn't alter your public IP address. It only updates your private IP address. For clarity, I use 192.168.1.X as my private range and have the IP at 192.168.1.45. When I run the command, it frees up the current IP and provides a new one. To obtain a fresh public IP, you'd need to restart your router or modem.

I manage my own Comcast setup. They allocate IP addresses based on the device linked to your modem. If you're renting, you'll have a gateway, a modem, and a router combined in one unit. With this arrangement, altering the IP isn't straightforward—you'd essentially need to disconnect the gateway and wait for the lease to end. For someone with their own modem and separate router, simply use the MAC address cloning option on the router to switch its MAC address. Then Comcast should assign a new IP. You might try contacting them, but it's unlikely they'll respond quickly.
