Your dad's old HP desktop could work for a Pentium G3258 build. You're considering an upgrade and are unsure about keeping Windows active after replacing the motherboard. The ASUS H81 motherboard supports Windows installation, though you may need to verify activation status post-MMO swap. Keeping the HDD outside might help maintain the installation, but confirm compatibility with your new components. Seek advice from a tech expert or check official documentation for specific steps.

Activate it using the product key. You can find it on a pink sticker, or retrieve the key directly if needed.

Using the same processor works fine. I’ve swapped the motherboard while keeping the processor, sent the same chip back to Intel via RMA, and it functioned perfectly. It seems the issue was due to the exact same make and model. If you switch processor and motherboard, it won’t work.

I’ll use the restroom when I get there, though the PC came with Vista and got upgraded to 7, making me unsure if the sticker applies to that version.

Uncertain if a view of key would help start Windows 7.

I won't be able to do it, so I'll check if I can pull out the main points using software.
