I hope this gives you some understanding. I'm assembling a new PC and selling my current laptop (in my usual style). I need to move my SSD from the laptop to the new PC, keeping the operating system with me, but wasn't sure if the OS would remain on my laptop when I sell it. I think it probably won't, but I just wanted some confirmation. Please let me know if this makes sense.
For clarity, I've confirmed my OS is portable and it's purchased separately from my Microsoft Account.

If you delete the disk, the operating system will be gone from the laptop.
Ensure any secondary disk is properly formatted, as it might still hold some of your personal data.
You’ll also need to format the main disk and reinstall Windows for the desktop.
The hardware drivers and data will remain, often causing problems if the new system doesn’t run smoothly.
Once the reinstall finishes, you should be able to log in using your old credentials and re-register Windows with a new license on this machine.
Remind any buyer that the main disk is removed and no OS remains.
This could cause some difficulties during the return process for both parties.

The OS licencas can be transferred.
The real installation, not.
From a laptop to a desktop, this is very improbable.
Moreover: if you delete the physical OS drive, the laptop will have nothing to start from.

Hello,
I need to make sure I explained clearly that I own two m.2 SSDs—one from the laptop and another from an old PC. I’ll keep the original SSD inside the machine but transfer the operating system to the new drive. If reinstalling is necessary and I don’t have a physical disk or USB to carry it, should I download Windows 11 to a USB stick instead?

I’ve just explained in my reply to the previous comment that I own two m.2 drives in the computer, which means there will still be a drive inside the machine when I sell it. Regarding the installation, when you say “highly unlikely,” could you give me more details? Hardware is fine, but software is not so much.

You can save any crucial files for transfer, though a new Windows setup will be needed for the updated system. Use the MS Media Creation Tool to generate a fresh Windows installation package before moving the disk to the new device. This preparation ensures you’re ready for the installation process later. How To - Windows 11 clean install tutorial Windows 11 Clean install tutorial is designed to guide you through each step of performing a clean install of Windows 11 version 23H2 or later. It can also be used for earlier versions, even though the interface may differ slightly while keeping the overall experience mostly consistent. forums.

That's great, thanks 👍 I hope everything goes according to plan. Just a reminder that the old machine doesn't include windows.

Just a note, all the things that make you special will vanish when you start fresh. Windows comes with its own backup tools that let you preserve and transfer your personal information to the new setup, but you need to configure it and understand how it functions; this includes Windows 11 Backup, which is only compatible with OneDrive. There are also many other backup options available, and you can also save your data manually to a USB drive if your system isn’t too complex.
