Hi
I found an old Dell N4030 laptop in my office with a broken monitor. When I took it to the repair shop, they mentioned that older laptops like this can have their CPUs changed because the CPU isn't soldered or glued to the motherboard. However, it might be that the motherboard has trouble working with a new CPU and overheats.

I want to upgrade from the Core i3 370m to the Core i5 480m, which is about 20% better for watching movies and using old versions of Photoshop and Office. I’m wondering if the motherboard used for the Dell N4030 i3 and i5 is compatible with this change.

Sorry for my bad English!

It seems Dell addressed your inquiry and confirmed it was correct.
