Is it the anti-cheat system? I used to play COD a while back... am I still impacted? (even though it's clearly removed, just a really bad game)

Things have gotten much worse recently, around 2023. It's not about old tricks like anticheat; it's the absence of strong security measures in these connections. Many CoD games run on peer-to-peer setups with outdated or missing protections. If a bad actor gains control over the hosting, things can get really risky.
