The recent Godzilla vs. King Kong film sparked thoughts about cross-game integrations. Have any titles combined storylines or characters in a meaningful way? I'm not looking for simple Easter eggs or just adding a new character. Also, while playing Forza Horizon 4, they incorporated the Quadra Turbo-R V-Tech car from Cyberpunk 2077—though it didn’t really impress me while driving.
However, licensing complications arise—determining who receives the greatest financial benefit, who actually creates the game, and who bears the costs. One might assume a balanced 50/50 distribution would be typical, but it isn't. Publishers generally believe their products are more valuable than others and wouldn’t fund a crossover themselves. Negotiations would be difficult. This likely explains why most crossovers end up featuring only a single character from a fighting game or are produced by the same publisher, making it simpler.
I wouldn't refer to single assets added through DLC as crossover. That's the most inexpensive method to trick people into spending money without real value (like Rocket League or Dota 2). I wouldn't even label crossover a game that pays homage to other titles. Examples include Cyberpunk 2077 (with references to Portal), Stanley Parable, and Evoland. For me, crossover means a game where the core gameplay is built around elements from multiple franchises. Think Kingdom of Hearts, Smash Bros series, Marvel vs Capcom, and similar.
I have some ideas: Pokken Tournament Street Fighter x Tekken Marvel vs. Capcom series (would that be relevant?) and several Nicktoons titles.
