It may not fix your problems, but the very first step I take is wiping down your computer. Sometimes a hidden glitch starts there and causes strange behavior on your machine. Totally agreeable to that point of view too.

Thanks everyone. To @thore: I don't know about BIOS yet, so I'll check that later and drop my other thoughts for after. To @SkyNetRising: Yes, sounds easy to take out and swap, so I'll fix it this weekend. Got you on the mouse part; I use a wireless headset and keyboard too, so everything uses dongles (I prefer looking clean). I could buy a cheap wired one though just to see if that's the problem. To @stonecarver: Yes, I bought a can of compressed air and will do this while trying to fix the fans. Hopefully I'll be able to update you on Sunday too. Thanks again everyone!

@stonecarver @SkyNetRising Hey, so tower is blasted with compressed air and I've moved the fan around now. Airflow should hopefully be in the right direction. I'll see how things go on Wednesday, maybe it will stay okay or not if something goes wrong. I'll use it all day then. Thanks for helping so far, P.S. Bluetooth mouse instead of dongle has worked fine so far.

Oh OK thanks for this. Have just googled the motherboard manual and looks like they should be in slot 1 & 2. Changing right now!

@Zerk2012 I had a tiny squeaky bum thing for just one minute! I moved a stick around, booted up, and it sounded louder than usual but wouldn't turn on. Also couldn't get the computer back down with the power button so I flicked the switch off. I took the RAM out, put it back in straight away, and everything worked fine this time.

It is now set up to run with two channels instead of just one.

@SkyNetRising @Zerk2012 Sorry for being late. My performance and general stuttering have improved a lot since these changes! I no longer see those multi-second blips, which is great. Thank you very much for this; it's finally usable for office work without that constant annoyance. However, I realized I need to put on new thermal paste right now? I unscrewed the cooler from inside the case while sorting the fans and just screwed it back in, but then the paste needs replacement. So I've ordered some of that and hope that's everything sorted out.
