Is there a program to do this or is it too risky? I need to do something for my friend on his PC but I don't want to keep trying to explain it to him.

Teamviewer is the best choice. The free version works well for personal use. Remember to follow your topics!

I'll hop on the train and mention TeamViewer. It's the simplest and safest method for getting access to a computer. Plus, it works around many firewall limits, so you don't have to deal with port forwarding or anything similar.

Both systems run Windows, so simply forward port 3389 through his modem or router to your PC. You’ll be able to connect using the public IP address assigned to it.
