I switched to Windows 10 during the free update window on my laptop some time ago. Now it’s been acting slow and has a lot of issues after years of use, so I’m thinking about reinstalling. I’m concerned that if I do that, I might end up back in Windows 8 because the BIOS will still have the old key. Would it be safe to reinstall Windows and get back to Windows 10? Creating a bootable USB or using settings seems like a better choice.

Windows 10 likely transformed the key into a compatible format, and using the media restore should re-establish it properly. This is the first time I've tried this, so others might have different experiences.

I switched from Windows 7 to Windows 10 during that free upgrade window and have reinstalled my system four times afterward. The process worked smoothly because the system locks major hardware to the Windows 10 license, allowing multiple reinstalls as long as you don’t replace critical parts like the motherboard. It’s still possible, though you’re definitely protected in your situation.

Sure, just follow the usual steps to make a bootable drive and you should be ready to go.

Take the file from Microsoft’s site, place it on a flash drive, and you’ll be all set.
