I adjusted the compatibility settings to win98/SE. It previously worked on 98 but then froze on the splash screen with no functionality. Now it’s stuck, though the music plays and the Windows button functions. The task manager isn’t accessible, and closing the window isn’t possible either. I’ve tried all the buttons on my laptop, but it remains unresponsive. Any suggestions? How can I open this window or launch the game? It seems like the direct play option was installed when prompted—maybe that caused the issue. It could also be linked to Direct X 5. I’m stuck and need help!
Welp, I restarted the laptop, now it "works" except when I try driving it looks like this. I get sound, controller (DS4) seems to work but screen is black...
Compatibility settings aren't ideal for classic games. DOSBox could work, or you might need to run Windows 98/ME inside a virtual machine.
I located the solution! I had to disable hardware acceleration in the settings now, and it functions, though only with 256 colors as per the adjustment. I would have liked to see a version with more colors and active hardware acceleration, but it seems my laptop doesn’t support that, or at least it isn’t compatible. I understood this point, yet I decided to take the simpler path first. Hmm, I think I need a copy of Win98, probably one I already had. I doubt it would work in DOSBox since it’s a Win98 title, and the same applies to XP/Vista games. Would VM help bypass the copy protection issues, like SecuROM being blocked on Windows 10? Because I tried, but no matter what, Windows 10 just blocks them as malware and refuses to play these titles.
Exploring the VM setup reveals it's more intricate than anticipated, and from the screenshots it doesn't appear to launch in full screen—though that’s not a major concern. I’ll attempt using DOSBox, keeping in mind it might not work for all titles relying on SecuROM or comparable systems.
