I'm having trouble getting faster downloads on my new laptop. I've checked both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, but the speeds are only around 12 Mbps. My phone shows 200 Mbps, so it looks like the issue might be with the laptop itself. Anyone have any ideas?
Do you know the difference between MB and Mb? For instance, Steam lists data in MB while Speedtest.net uses Mb. 1MB equals 8Mb.
I attempted to download from both Steam and Epic Games, but I experienced similar slow speeds. You can view your speed test results here: https://www.speedtest.net/result/9343079724.png. I’m trying to gather as much detail as possible. I’m not very familiar with this topic, so please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you in advance.
You're likely not relying on the wired link and instead using the wireless setup of your laptop. Consider turning off your wireless card if an Ethernet cable is connected. Antivirus programs with firewall or network filtering features may interfere with downloads and reduce speed.
I fixed the Wi-Fi issues and switched to using the Ethernet connection. The laptop came with McAfee, so I removed that. I’m not sure if I should adjust the firewall or network filtering settings, but I’m trying to resolve it now.
Everything operates at gigabit speed, so unless your router or device has a speed cap, the problem likely lies elsewhere. Initially, Steam and Epic displayed download rates in MB/s, suggesting roughly 100Mbps—this would require the default settings to show in Mbps rather than bits per second. The router supports gigabit ports, but the speed test results are confusing unless your internet service provider is intentionally throttling your connection.
