If you’re worried about what is and isn't updated, opt for the Windows 10 Pro edition. As far as I know, it offers greater update management capabilities.

I possess Professional, however, my options are limited; I can only halt updates and select the timing for installation on my computer. I’m running version 1909, but I lack the ability to selectively determine which items to install and which to disregard as was possible in versions 7 and 8. Am I overlooking something?

Indeed, the Update methodology and available choices have undergone significant alterations since Windows 7 and 8 were released.

You will not regain access to those previous options.

Similar to the shift in Update selections from Windows XP to Windows 7.

The system evolves.

Primarily due to factors such as:

Publication of proof-of-concept exploits targeting the Microsoft-NSA cryptographic flaw.
Release of two proof-of-concept exploits related to the CurveBall (CVE-2020-0601) vulnerability.

A resolution for this issue was distributed within the past seven days.

Proceed with caution.

Typical Windows updates generally do not alter drivers, and if problems arise, you can remove them via Programs and Features as in Windows 7, where they remain listed. Additionally, it’s possible to prevent Windows updates from automatically downloading and installing drivers within Windows 10 – a practice I've used since the initial release of the operating system due to the desire for older GPU driver versions: https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/disab...windows-10
