Can Steam run on a secondary drive?
Hi, I'm facing issues launching Steam games from my secondary drive. They don't work well—some don't start at all, others crash after the intro. There are many problems in general. I've tried moving Dead Island, Skyrim and Saints Row: The Third to my C: drive from my secondary drive, which fixed the issue. But now I only have a 128GB SSD as the boot device. Anyone else having this problem? Is it connected to Windows 8.1? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (It would be great if I could upgrade to a larger drive.)
You're asking about the exact behavior when you try to launch something, specifically what happens if clicking a name doesn't work or causes a crash. You also want to know if screenshots would help document any issues.
ATM i am trying a clean install of Steam so i can´t screenshot but by "not launching" (for Saints row 3) after i start the game (dosen´t matter if its is from steam client och from the folder) It just pops up a small White box on the desktop. About the size of a "before launching setup screen". and nothing happens. no error message or anything. I will return with results tomorrw when i have reinstalled Steam aswell as my games.
Viewing Saints Row 3 appears this way: Image link: http://imgur.com/5O8eQ5P
Are the games placed in the main Steam directory (where Steam is installed)? Some titles encounter problems when run elsewhere, like adding another Steam library folder and installing there. If this only affects games not in the standard Steam library folder, consider moving them there and reinstalling. If they still don’t function properly, please reach out.
That's what I was worried about. I tried it and it worked fine, but as mentioned in my first update, I only have a small SSD. That means I can't really put my Steam library on the C: drive. The first Steam was installed on the E: drive, so I had to make a map there to get things running properly. Yesterday I reinstalled Steam to the C: drive and added a custom folder on the E: drive, but still some games aren't working.
