Hi, I have a lenovo ih61m motherboard. I am planning to replace my i3-3240 with an i7-3770. I already own a gigabyte r9 380 4gb which is a bit slow for my cpu, so I'm wondering if it's possible to overclock that mobo too. Also, can you overclock only in bios or do I need msi afterburner or some other program? I also have 16gb (2x8gb) ddr3 running at 1333mhz, windows 10 pro 64-bit, and a 1tb hdd.

No, those chips stay stuck. You might try changing the BCLK frequency, but you'll break everything instead of just speeding up the CPU.

No, those chips have a lock on them. You might try changing the clock speed for the main board (BCLK), but that will overheat or crash your whole computer instead of just speeding up the CPU alone.

Usually, a factory-made PC board comes with locked-up settings that stop you from changing them easily.

So, is there anything to tweak inside MSI Afterburner for my graphics card, or is it completely useless right now?

so does MSI Afterburner work to boost my GPU speed, or am I just stuck?

You can still run MSI Afterburner, but you won't be able to tweak your CPU speed.

Oh, the CPU isn't worrying me. I have 16 gigs of RAM which is perfect for both gaming and an Intel Core i7-3770. Just now, I just need a better graphics card. I'm not buying a new thing like a Radeon RX 490 or something newer because right now I want to focus on upgrading my CPU and getting the computer setup ready. Thanks so much for all your replies! Also, if I remember correctly when I overclock the GPU it shouldn't go to extreme high numbers and I mustn't change the voltage. Please tell me if I'm wrong because I don't want to accidentally break something.

You need a K processor anyway. Look for an i7-2600K or an i7-2700K, and make sure your RAM is set to dual channel (like 2 sticks of 8GB). Edit: just because you don't have a K model doesn't mean the motherboard won't let you overclock it. Pick a regular non-K version instead. A good option would be an i7-3770.

yeah I know I bought an i7-3770 last week from someone on the internet and it came with a cooler. I use two DIMMs in my RAM, which makes me run it in dual channel mode. Thanks for getting back to me.
