Can I use a 212X for overclocking?
Hey there,
I'm trying to figure out if I can overclock my i5-6600K with a 212X cooler from Cooler Master. Got any advice?
i have a 212 evo on an i5-4690k and it's running at 4.2 ghz with temperatures under 60 degrees.
the 212x offers a slight improvement, while the 6600k uses less power, making it a more reasonable choice for this setup.
it won't shatter any records, but it should provide a decent overclock within budget. there are higher-end coolers available, but for a budget model it's still acceptable.
It should work just fine, actually. A stronger cooler would be ideal. Cryorig offers some decent options. However, you might run into stability issues for other reasons before thermal management becomes a concern. To be clear, your OC will hit a threshold where raising the voltage becomes dangerous, but boosting the BCLK or multiplier leads to instability. This situation will appear before even the lowest-end CPU cooler causes overheating.
