I've been thinking about upgrading my setup to the 14700F. This is what I currently have.
i5-13400
Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti
16 Gigs of DDR4 3200Mhz (planning to switch to 4x16Gb DDR4 3200)
ASUS EX-B760M-V5 D4 (intending a motherboard upgrade)
EVGA SuperNOVA 550
For the same price as the 14700F, I could purchase a new 5900xt with a solid motherboard. Alternatively, I might sell the 13400 for a new PSU.
Is this a wise move? Well, the 14700F is nearly six months newer than the 5900XT, and the 5900XT is essentially the same as the 2020 5950X. That puts it around six years old, whereas the 14700F is about two years old.
My main worries are
multicore performance
since I spend a lot on video and photo editing. I’m also a bit concerned about single-core speed, though not too much—because I occasionally play older games.
It seems the 5900XT should outperform the 14700F in multicore tasks thanks to its 16p core versus my 8p+12e setup, but I can’t find a direct comparison. I might be mistaken. Intel has clearly improved their E-core performance a lot. But the thread count will be 32 versus 28.
Also, I don’t upgrade often. I’d probably wait 6–8 years before doing a major overhaul, so by then I’ll likely move to DDR6 with a new board and CPU. That means skipping DDR5 entirely for the 14700F. So I’m left with either DDR4 14700F or the 5900XT.
Any thoughts? Also, do you have any benchmarks you can share for comparison?

as a video editor, i'd choose the i9 12900 with extra cores for better video processing.

I doubt the 4x RAM slot will accommodate it. The 14700f represents a significant upgrade over the 13400.

True. There are just 2 slots available for memory on the motherboard.
