Can I upgrade an i5 6400?
Hi there, I really hope someone can offer some advice. I’m running a Windows 10 desktop with an i5 6400 and I really enjoy it 😀 But I’m aware that Windows 11 is coming soon, so my main concern is whether I can upgrade the CPU to meet the requirements for Windows 11. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

For relevance, consider using CPU-Z and take a screenshot of what appears under the mainboard's tab.
Unfortunately, it isn't possible to upgrade to officially support Windows 11, though you can still obtain Windows 11 on that system and it should function properly. The most recent machine I use that runs 11 regularly is an i7 2600 based Optiplex 790, which remains stable and operates well. I must fully download the newest version and adjust the registry to enable the latest feature pack updates—this was a simple process without any problems. Still, if preserving your data is important, always back up before making changes to your Windows installation.
Hi geofelt, thanks for the reply. I'm not very familiar with older PCs, but it seems Microsoft is pushing people to use Windows 11 or charge for support of Windows 10. Since upgrading isn't an option, I might have to try a workaround or get a new computer. Probably a fresh machine will be the best choice long-term. Appreciate your feedback.
How much assistance do you require from Microsoft?
Have you ever reached out to them for help?
Many people still use Windows 7.
Your computer will continue functioning as long as you wish.
Run Windows Defender and avoid opening unexpected emails.
Maintain an external backup of important files, like photos.
As long as your PC handles things well, keep it.
And by the way, I’m around 86, which makes me much older than you.
Hi geofelt, your 19 years as a senior are impressive 😊 I hope I'm still in great shape at 86. Your advice really makes sense, so I'll stick with what I have and watch how things unfold. Thanks a lot for your guidance!
