Can I overclock?
Can I overclock?
Hello, I just purchased all the components for my PC and they are being shipped to me. I was wondering if it's possible to overclock the CPU to 4.0 GHz? My specs include an Intel Core i5 6600K @3.5, a 600-watt Evga power supply, and I'm not sure if you need to know about a GTX 970 graphics card.
The 6600K is set to boost performance by default, reaching up to 3.9. You can likely increase it to 4.2 with minimal adjustments.
It varies based on the specific motherboard. Many aren't suited for overclocking, and some lack the necessary components to do it consistently.
I thought you had a motherboard that supports overclocking, such as one with the Z170 chipset.
I made a mistake, I thought you had a board that could be overclocked, such as one with the Z170 chipset. Here is the link to the motherboard: http://www.outletpc.com/jn4281-gigabyte-...0-hd3.html

You're doing great. The 6600K is already turbocharged up to 3.9 by default.
You should be able to reach 4.2 with only minor adjustments.
Thanks a lot! This is my first build. Do you have any advice on overclocking? I'm still unsure how to do it properly, even though you mentioned going into the BIOS.

You really do. The 6600K is set to Turbos up to 3.9 by default.
You should reach around 4.2 with only minor adjustments.
Thanks a lot! This is my first attempt. Do you have any advice on overclocking? I’m still unsure how to proceed, though I know you check the BIOS.
It should work fine. I haven’t tried the MoBo yet, but if it’s Z170 it should support overclocking. You might be able to set the CPU Clock Multiplier to 40 for a 4.0GHz target. It should be a modest increase that doesn’t require further changes.
Intel chipsets are a pain and manufactures are no help, back in the day I bought a 1155 mobo model "X77H2-A3" because of the jedi mind trick (these are not the mobo's you are looking for) cause you call your board "X77" X=Xtreme right? And if your not that familiar with intel chipsets there is no "X77 chipset" it's Z = Xtreme aka a 1155 oc capable mobo..

It's a real challenge, but you're doing it right. The 6600K is already set to Turbos at 3.9, and you should reach up to 4.2 with minor adjustments.
You're welcome! This is my first attempt, so any advice would be great. I'm still figuring out the overclocking process—I know you can do it in the BIOS, but I'm not sure how to proceed exactly.
If you have a Z170 model, overclocking should be possible. You might want to set the CPU Clock Multiplier to 40 for a 4.0GHz target. It should be a manageable overclock without needing further changes.
Thanks! 😉
