I usually listen to podcasts in Firefox while working but it's annoying when I need to stop the podcast just to focus better. I have to open all my tabs to find the right one and click around to pause it. You get the picture. It would be awesome if there was a quick way to start or stop listening with a special key that even works even if Firefox is closed on the screen. Can we fix this? Firefox probably doesn't have this built-in feature yet. Are there any other programs, extensions, or maybe another browser that can do this natively for me?

If your computer has several programs running at once, you probably won't be able to get rid of whatever is playing from Tab 18 with just a few clicks or special keys.

Why not launch a second Firefox window? Just leave one window open so you can hear audio or hit play while working. Or drop it down to the taskbar. Maybe even have two screens: one sticking out and one tucked away just for listening. That way, when you need to focus on something else, your podcast stays right there without losing sight of it.

You probably know how to open a URL with VLC, but maybe you haven't tried using its special key buttons yet. You could change those buttons so they work on whatever you want.

My desktop shows a YouTube video playing inside a browser window. I can pause or start it using the Play/Pause key on my keyboard. This works no matter what other apps are open or which tab is currently focused.

It sounds just like what I need to know! Could you let me know which keyboard model you have?

Now there are hundreds or even thousands of keyboards to choose from with volume and media controls. Just look at the options and pick the one that fits your size, money, and other needs. My K70 LUX is one of many Corsair lines that give you these choices.

But the thing is, I don't know which button that does what because there isn't a hotkey for it on most keyboards. I can't be certain if this specific function belongs to Albalcho's system since nothing with a play/pause button will work like that.

It doesn't matter what's running on my computer. Whether apps like WinAMP or Media Player are playing audio while I'm gaming, VLC is showing a video in a window when I'm browsing, File Explorer is open in the front, YouTube is playing videos from websites, or something else is on—everything still works. The volume wheel and stop/play/forward/backward keys control my music just fine.
