Can a single fan be taken off the NH-D15?
I mistakenly ordered the NH-D15 instead of the NH-D15S. My case only accommodates 160mm, which is why I chose the D15S. Can I take off one fan from the D15 to make it fit like the D15S? What would be the difficulty for someone new at this? Also, if I remove a fan from the D15, does it essentially turn into a D15S or remain different? I have a Phanteks P400 Eclipse case. Thanks!
Removing the fans is simple, but it won't fully address your issue.
Both fans currently in their original positions on the D15 will reach 165mm.
You can find a diagram of the dimensions here: http://noctua.at/en/nh-d15/specification
If you must keep the D15 without swapping, consider using 120mm fans, which should function adequately.
For rams with tall heat spreaders, you might need to adjust the fan placement for clearance.
The D15 is slightly offset to allow clearance around graphics cards with backplates in the first PCIe slot.
