I’m currently studying on campus and facing issues with gaming performance. The connection often experiences high ping, making it difficult to play smoothly. I’ve noticed spikes reaching up to 1000ms, which happen frequently and in short bursts lasting about 5 to 10 seconds. Various IT staff have offered different solutions, but none seem effective. My speed test results show normal ping values online, yet they spike during Discord sessions and gameplay. My networking professor suggested using a proxy server, though I can’t set one up on the school network. The final suggestion was to limit upload speeds, but I’m unsure what that means or how to implement it. My assumption is the problem might lie with my hardware—specifically, the cheap gaming laptop I bought from Walmart. It’s possible the motherboard or NIC isn’t up to the task.

You might also consider using a VPN, but I think there could be some QoS traffic shaping on your campus network. The better option would be to set up your own connection directly from the local ISP, which you'd need to pay for each month.

I think using a VPN isn't allowed on your campus network, but I'm just trying to access my regular internet.
