Your budget ranges from 500 to 700 USD.
The notebook size you're thinking about doesn't matter much, but a 15-inch version would be ideal.
You don’t need a portable or desktop replacement laptop; it will replace your current work computer.
Battery life isn’t a major concern for you.
You prefer not to play games on the laptop.
Other tasks include photo/video editing, web browsing, using Tally software, some Office applications, and watching videos.
You require 256GB of storage, though 512GB would be better.
You’d like to keep the laptop for about 10 years, as your father prefers not to replace electronics often.
Regarding optical drives, you’re open to DVD ROM/writer or Blu-ray ROM/writer options.
Please mention any brands you prefer and those you dislike, along with reasons.
Your country is India.
If you have any further details to share.
My father needs a fast replacement for his slow desktop work computer. He’ll be using the laptop for office tasks during our two-month trip to the US. We’re looking to buy it locally in the US because they’re more affordable. Durability is key—aiming for 10 years or at least 7-8 years. It won’t be used for gaming or video editing, so the GPU isn’t a priority.
I’m considering purchasing a refurbished MacBook Air M1 for around 700 USD in 2023. Is this still a worthwhile investment? I’ve heard it’s smooth and has excellent battery life. Since I haven’t owned a refurbished device before, I’m hesitant due to uncertainty about its condition and longevity. At this price range, what would be the most suitable laptop option for me?

What additional activities would you like to perform on your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, etc.) Browsing the web, using Tally (an ERP system), some Office tasks, and possibly watching videos.

I didn't want to purchase a laptop under 500 USD since most of them appear to be dual-core and lack durability for long use, don't they? I require something that can last five years. You're welcome to adjust me if needed.

I'm currently in the US for a month, allowing me to buy laptops locally in Oakland where prices are lower. I don't have a preference for the seller as long as they are trustworthy. Which specific laptop do you think is best suited for light tasks like my father's?

None of the high-end models with quad-core processors and 256+ GB storage come at an affordable price, as shown in the provided link.

It's a "WORK LAPTOP" that hosts all of his work online through web browsers, or does he need specific software installed on his PC? Apple may impose certain restrictions on programs that can be run on his computer.

If he’s already familiar with Windows, changing to MacOS might not be the best choice.

Personally, I’d prefer a 16" screen. It offers a bit more height while still fitting into backpacks and bags designed for 15" laptops. It doesn’t add any extra bulk to the device.

Using a U-series processor like the AMD 7735U or Intel U series results in lower power consumption. This is beneficial for reducing heat under the keyboard and less fan noise when sitting at a desk. It’s also less likely to overheat during hot summer days, especially without air conditioning. The Intel U series provides only 2 cores, so I’d recommend AMD if you’re looking for a U-series processor.

You can find this model here: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo...-5...Id=6533956
Though the 8GB RAM is a bit limited, I’d favor 16GB. I’d inquire if there’s an available free slot to add another 8GB later.

The provided documentation outlines the specifications for your laptop. For situations where your father primarily uses online tools or cloud services, a 256GB storage should suffice. However, if he frequently installs programs or performs tasks directly on the device, the available space will become insufficient quickly. The exact capacity needed depends on the battery type installed—specifically, a 38kWh battery allows for an additional SATA SSD bay, while a larger 45kWh battery limits upgrades to only the existing 256GB M.2 2280 SSD. You may need to remove the bottom panel to assess available options. A 17.3-inch display works well as a desktop alternative, though it may be less convenient for students or travelers. For most office users, 8GB of RAM is adequate, but power users should note that this model has 8GB permanently installed, with an option for an additional 8GB stick via a single port. Upgrading to 16GB would be feasible later, and current RAM prices are very affordable. The 5625U processor offers solid battery performance and a suitable multi-core configuration for general use.

This accommodates a microSD card slot. Would that not be adequate as an alternative?

For slow file storage it would be adequate. Most microSD cards offer relatively low sustained write speeds, around 20-50MB/s. Some premium cards provide faster writes but not all readers can handle them, and they are priced similarly to SSDs. A budget M.2 SSD usually delivers a write speed of 2000MB/s or more. A standard SATA SSD operates at about 500MB/s. When launching programs or moving files, the SSDs will appear noticeably smoother and perform better. In terms of cost, they are comparable, though the SSD remains significantly quicker. This 1TB drive costs $35, considering this laptop includes a 38kwh battery.

I believe the Lenovo IdeaPad falls short. The build quality and longevity are lacking.
I've tried the Thinkbook series, though it costs more, but I'm satisfied with it.
