Building Advice on the Dual 3090 with Ryzen 9 9950X3D for motion design and rendering
Hello everyone,
I’m setting up a high-performance workstation focused on motion design, VFX, and GPU rendering with tools like After Effects, Cinema 4D, and Octane Render. I’m seeking advice or insights regarding compatibility, airflow management, potential bottlenecks, and possible alternatives.
Estimated purchase timing: As soon as possible (ideally within the next few weeks)
Budget range: Between $2000 and $3000
Usage priority from highest to lowest:
- Motion Design / 2D & 3D Animation (After Effects, Cinema 4D)
- GPU Rendering (Octane Render)
- Video Editing / VFX / Compositing
- General Productivity
Are you purchasing a monitor?
No
Parts to upgrade or buy:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme
- RAM options:
• KINGSTON 128GB DDR5 6000MT/s Cl32 DIMM Kit Of 8 Fury Renegade Pro Expo
• G.SKILL Zeta R5 NEO Series (AMD Expo) DDR5 RAM 128GB (4x32GB) 6000MT/s CL30-36-96 1.40V Desktop Memory RDIMM - Black (F5-6000R3036G32GQ4-ZR5NK)
- Storage: 990 PRO PCIe® 4.0 NVMe® SSD 2TB
- Cooling: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420mm AIO
- Case: Fractal Design Meshify 2 XL or Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic XL
- PSU: Corsair AX1600i Digital 1600W 80+ Titanium
- Owned parts:
• GPU: 2x MSI RTX 3090 Ventus 3X 24G OC
- Operating System: No (already have a valid Windows license)
Preferred websites for parts: None – just looking for the most compatible and stable configuration
Location: Casablanca, Morocco (will import components if necessary)
Parts preferences:
- AMD CPU (specifically 9950X3D)
- ASUS motherboard (for reliability and features)
Open to suggestions on RAM, cooling solutions, and case choices, as long as they guarantee full compatibility and adequate cooling for the dual GPUs.
Overclocking: Not a priority
Multiple GPUs: Yes – currently have two MSI RTX 3090 Ventus units for GPU rendering with Octane
Monitor resolution: Main display is 1920x1080
Additional notes:
My main focus is on airflow and the spacing between the GPUs in the cases. I want to confirm that the motherboard can handle both 3090s at peak performance without significant lane-sharing or throttling.
Since this system will be used daily for professional tasks, stability and cooling take precedence over aesthetics.
I’d appreciate your feedback on whether this setup aligns with my workflow or if there are more efficient options available.
Why am I upgrading?
My existing system (Dell Precision T7610 – an older Xeon-based build) struggles with modern demands. I require a robust, future-proof configuration for intensive 3D, compositing, and rendering tasks.
Welcome to the forums, newcomer! It's recommended to format your thread with the information you've received here; *How to Ask for New Build or Upgrade Advice*. Initially, it's important to acknowledge where proper respect should be shown—this adaptation comes from the Animal's *How To Ask For New Build Advice* Sticky. I developed it since many users are now seeking upgrade guidance both on this site and in the CPU forums, and I believe... forums. so they can offer useful suggestions or tweaks for your build. RAM: 128GB (4x32GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 (G.Skill Trident Z5 or Corsair Dominator Platinum) Do you have a link to these? It's wise to ensure the RAM has AMD's E.X.P.O. advertised on it to avoid instability problems. According to the details, the rest of your build seems solid. I’d suggest using the Fractal case and consider adding an HDD to store all your finished projects. I moved this thread from the Components section to the Systems section.
