Hey there! I'm putting together a new computer build and was hoping you could take a look at my parts list – see if you had any suggestions for improvements without breaking the bank. Here’s what I’ve got:

Thanks so much!

Yep, but the card you picked seems to have some negative comments about the fans and temps. The case is also a bit iffy, and you picked a pretty nice looking motherboard so you may want to look at something with a window and make it look nice to actually see.

I like Phanteks a lot, last 3 systems I built used their cases...

Seriously, that GPU is pretty weak. The rest of the build looks great though – but honestly, only having 2GB of VRAM isn’t going to cut it with the newer games. You're probably on a budget, so I’d suggest looking at an RX570 or RX 580; both have 8GB, which would be a huge improvement. And for Windows and maybe a few games, definitely get a 240GB SSD – you’ll really notice the difference!

Seriously, don’t skimp on an SSD – it makes a huge difference when your operating system is running from a hard drive. And going with just one stick of RAM will really slow things down. The 9600K has its own graphics processor, so I'd probably skip the dedicated graphics card for now, focus on getting more memory, maybe add a good M.2 drive, and then look into upgrading the graphics card later when you have the funds?

Seriously, is this build even meant for gaming? If it is, you’re wasting your money. You could save a ton by going with a Ryzen 5 2600 – it's about $50 less than an i5. Skip the fancy cooler and save another $24, then use that extra cash to get a 1650 Super or RX 580 for your graphics card, along with some faster RAM, maybe even splurge on a better monitor. Those cards will handle 1080p gaming at 60-75 frames per second easily. Or, you could save another $50 and get an upgraded version like a 1660 Super. Another option is to just go with the i5 and hold off on the graphics card until you can afford something better – a 1030 would be really cheap for a basic gaming PC, or it’s great for upgrading older business computers. You definitely wouldn't want to build your system for that low of a price.

Just checking in – was that build list roughly what you had in mind?

Honestly, I’d just pop an SSD in there.

A 240GB one should be plenty for Windows, at least if you don't plan on keeping your games on that drive.

Switching to an R5 2600 with a B450 motherboard will shave off about £100, and skip buying a boxed version of Windows or Norton – you’ll save another £100 that way. Cutting out the fancy cooler will also save you around £20, and going for an RX 570 instead of a 1030 would be a good call.
